ZIP.ca
Amanda and I enjoy movies. We enjoy them so much that we were renting 4 movies every weekend (that’s about $25-$30 a week). We then heard of this service called ZIP.ca from out friend Jen, and decided to give the 2 week free trial a go. This service is awesome! For the same price we were paying every week, we can now have upto 3 movies out at a time, for as long as we want!
When you sign up, you need to create a ZipList, which is essentially all the movies that you wish to see. You can rank them however you want, and when one become available, they send it out to you. The discs come with pre-paid return envelope, so when you’re done with one movie, you send it back, and a few days later they send you the next available one on your list.
You can keep track of which movies you have out, which are being shipped to you and which ones you’ve already seen through the ZipList. When you have sent a disc back, you can log onto the site and update the status of that disc to returned, and they will process that day as if they have received it, and send you your next disc.
They have a huge selection of movies to choose from, in many different categories. They also have TV series, but it’s like at a movie store, you need to get each disc separately, and they may not all be available at the same time, so you may not get them in order. When you are looking through the movies, there is an Availability bar under each showing it’s availability. We’ve found that any new releases have very low availability, and don’t get sent out often. We have been using this service since before Christmas, and have received 25 movies so far, but we still haven’t gotten any new releases. Instead we have been getting lots of older movies (like the original Godzilla, in Japanese and American versions) and movies we’ve never heard of before.
Overall, it’s been a good experience, and a good way to get lots of movies at a good price. There are also other plans (like 4 movies out at a time, or only 1 movie out at a time) but the best value is in the plan that we got. I highly recommend it for anybody that regularly rents many movies, and isn’t fussed if they don’t get new releases right away.
If you are interested in signing up, let me know, and I can send you a link to a sign up page.
